3。5! one of the best women characters/pov written by a man that I’ve come across。 was pleasantly surprised by this! def wouldn’t really consider it a mystery more than general fiction, but the “mysteries” were still fun。 loved seeing how alexander mccall smith truly hates men。 me too sir

I really enjoyed this book。 I think the setting in Botswana was very interesting and loved the descriptions of the desert and the torn trees, very evocative。 The characters were well drawn and I felt a real connection with the protagonist。 I am sure the character development will increase in future books in the series。 I look forward to continuing to read this series。

A weird amalgamum of mystery, feminism, africanism, and condescesion (though at times it's hard to tell where that's aimed), this book only took me about four hours to read, so it didn't bother me at the time that the point escaped me。 I got the feeling that the author was trying to say something more than "this is the mystery and this is how she solved it" but it was never resolved。 The Mysteries were predictable and tame but kind of charming in an encyclopedia brown kind of way。 I'll keep it f A weird amalgamum of mystery, feminism, africanism, and condescesion (though at times it's hard to tell where that's aimed), this book only took me about four hours to read, so it didn't bother me at the time that the point escaped me。 I got the feeling that the author was trying to say something more than "this is the mystery and this is how she solved it" but it was never resolved。 The Mysteries were predictable and tame but kind of charming in an encyclopedia brown kind of way。 I'll keep it for sick days' light reading, and buy any more in the series I come across (used, not full price)。 。。。more

Made me laugh out loud。 Such a fantastic African story! One of my all-time favourites!

Collection of related and delightfully cozy mysteries to be solved by novice Botswanan detective, Precious Ramotswe。 Endearing characters in a vivid African setting。 Will try the next installment in the series。

Very good audiobook

Listened to the first few chapters of this as an audiobook。 The British woman doing the African voices was just not my thing。 Wish they would have just had someone who actually had that accent do the reading。 Couldn't finish。 Listened to the first few chapters of this as an audiobook。 The British woman doing the African voices was just not my thing。 Wish they would have just had someone who actually had that accent do the reading。 Couldn't finish。 。。。more

I kept waiting for something to happen and it never did。

Not poetically written, but plainly written (which I prefer) and competently enough written, but this book did not earn more than 3 stars because it just didn't spark anything in me。 Maybe it's because of the setting, which is Africa。 Unlike some people, I don't yearn to travel to Africa, and, so, books placed there hold little interest for me。 Other than that。。。。 Not poetically written, but plainly written (which I prefer) and competently enough written, but this book did not earn more than 3 stars because it just didn't spark anything in me。 Maybe it's because of the setting, which is Africa。 Unlike some people, I don't yearn to travel to Africa, and, so, books placed there hold little interest for me。 Other than that。。。。 。。。more

It took me forever to get through this。。。mostly because I chose the audio version and the library kept taking it away from me。 Apparently I'd rather read than listen。 This however was worth all the delays。 It was simply delightful。 A well preformed, wonderful story about a strong, smart woman。 I loved this! This was fun, although not what I was expecting。 The protagonist, a brand new private investigator with no training, solves a series of small questions。 All are solved in a matter of days and a few pages。 The rest of the book focuses on the life and family of the protagonist。

I wanted to like this book, and with its seemingly universal popularity, I had high hopes for it。 But it was disappointing。 The plot was uninteresting, the detective action uninspired, and the writing style elementary。 Moreover this book was so misandrist that it was astonishing that a man wrote it。 A female detective, fine。 A woman taking a career path not normally done in her society by women, okay。 But the constant male bashing and dopey male characters was too much。

I only picked up this one because my favorite reviewer was reading book 2 in this series and I wanted her to notice me。 ME ME ME。 ((googoogaga)) I couldn't feel aroused, er, whole until I could see if we felt the same about the book。 ((falls backward on the bed, backside of hand over forehead)) That said, ugh, this book。 No lesbian leads! I admired her so much for opening her own detective agency。 Her little mysteries were hilarious。 The setting of Botswana so uniquely wondrous!! I was just bored。 I was really looking forward to reading this as it always seems to be included in any list of recommended reads that I see。 It is on my recommended reads based on the other books I've enjoyed。 I just found it tedious。 I don't enjoy long-winded, overly descriptive writing and this was both。 It was disjointed and didn't flow for me。 I will not be reading any sequels。 I was just bored。 I was really looking forward to reading this as it always seems to be included in any list of recommended reads that I see。 It is on my recommended reads based on the other books I've enjoyed。 I just found it tedious。 I don't enjoy long-winded, overly descriptive writing and this was both。 It was disjointed and didn't flow for me。 I will not be reading any sequels。 。。。more

3。5 stars。。。。this is a charming and funny detective story。 The main character, Precious Ramotswe, is hilarious and has a ‘take no prisoners’ kind of attitude。 The author, Alexander McCall Smith, has an easy style of writing and has shaped an intriguing main character in Precious Ramotswe。 I will definitely look for the next book in this series。

Ann

I enjoyed the book, as I did the first time i read it years ago。 It feels more like a collection of short stories than a novel - chapters are disjointed and the irdervseems haphazard rather than flowing into each other as one story。 That said, the characters are fun, and the stories interesting (a bit fluffy)。

Josh

Surprisingly good! I always connect Africa with poverty and tribes。 This book breaks those preconceived notions。 It is a lovely place。 Yes, there is poverty and crime, but so too is there humor and love。
